Total NDE Services Completes VT, UT & MPI Inspection of 8 Dam Gates
Another Project Successfully Completed,
Total NDE Services is pleased to highlight the successful completion of an important Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and inspection project at the Kajaki Dam Hydropower Project in Helmand, Afghanistan, carried out in collaboration with 77 Construction Company.
The project involved the inspection of eight (8) dam gates, where Total NDE Services performed a comprehensive range of Visual Testing (VT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI/MT) to assess the condition and integrity of critical welded structures.
The project was successfully completed within the required timeframe, demonstrating our team’s technical capability, coordination, efficiency, and commitment to delivering inspection services in challenging project environments.

About the Kajaki Dam Hydropower Project
The Kajaki Dam is an important hydropower and water-management facility located in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The dam includes large-scale mechanical and structural components that require appropriate inspection and maintenance to ensure their continued serviceability and structural integrity.
As part of the inspection assignment, Total NDE Services’ professional inspection team was deployed to the project site to carry out NDT examinations of the dam gate structures.
The work required careful planning and coordination due to the size and configuration of the gates, accessibility requirements, and the importance of maintaining inspection quality while working within the project schedule.
NDT Inspection of 8 Dam Gates
The inspection program covered eight dam gates and incorporated three major NDT techniques:
1. Visual Testing (VT)
Visual Testing (VT) was performed as an initial and essential stage of the inspection.
The inspection included detailed examination of accessible welded areas and structural components for visible discontinuities and workmanship-related conditions, including:
- Weld surface condition
- Weld profile
- Surface cracks
- Undercutting
- Overlap
- Surface porosity
- Arc strikes
- Excessive reinforcement
- Welding irregularities
- Corrosion and surface deterioration
- General structural condition
Visual inspection provided an important basis for identifying areas requiring further examination through other NDT methods.
2. Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) was performed to examine welds and structural components for internal or subsurface discontinuities that may not be detectable through visual inspection.
UT provides the ability to investigate the internal condition of welds by transmitting high-frequency ultrasonic waves into the material and analyzing the resulting signals.
The inspection was particularly valuable for identifying potential discontinuities such as:
- Lack of fusion
- Lack of penetration
- Internal cracks
- Slag inclusions
- Internal discontinuities
- Other volumetric or planar indications
Where required, ultrasonic inspection can provide information about the location and depth of indications, making it an important NDT technique for critical welded structures.
3. Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI/MT) was also performed on selected welds and ferromagnetic components.
MPI is particularly effective for detecting surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.
The inspection was used to identify indications associated with:
- Surface cracks
- Near-surface cracks
- Weld toe cracking
- Weld discontinuities
- Other linear indications
MPI complemented the VT and UT examinations by providing additional sensitivity to surface-breaking and near-surface defects.
Comprehensive NDT Approach
One of the key advantages of the project was the use of multiple complementary NDT methods rather than relying on a single inspection technique.
| NDT Method | Primary Purpose |
|---|---|
| Visual Testing (VT) | Surface condition and visible weld/structural defects |
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | Internal and subsurface discontinuities |
| Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) | Surface and near-surface indications |
The combination of VT + UT + MPI provided a broader assessment of the condition of the inspected welds and structural components.
Inspection in a Challenging Project Environment
Conducting NDT inspection on major hydropower infrastructure presents several practical challenges, particularly when dealing with large structures and difficult access conditions.
The Total NDE Services team coordinated inspection activities with the project team to ensure:
- Proper inspection planning
- Safe access to inspection locations
- Appropriate NDT technique selection
- Systematic examination of designated areas
- Accurate recording of inspection results
- Efficient coordination with the client
- Completion of inspection activities within the agreed timeframe
Our team maintained focus on inspection quality, safety, documentation, and project schedule throughout the assignment.
Successful Completion Within the Required Timeframe
A major achievement of this project was the successful completion of the assigned inspection work within the required timeframe.
Following completion of the assignment, Kajaki Power Energy issued a Certificate of Appreciation to Total NDE, recognizing the company’s professionalism, dedication, technical expertise, efficiency, commitment, and cooperation during the project.
